The River Severn at Worcester

By Worcester the River Severn is clearly in its middle course. One of the key social and economic issues here is actually crossing the river. With a congested medieval city centre, a new road traversing the river and its extensive floodplain south of the city has been built to aid transportation westwards to Malvern and the Three Counties Showground.

Top left - this photograph is looking westwards across the floodplain from the elevated east bank of the river along the A422 towards Powick. This new ring road south of Worcester has been built over the floodplain and the elevated section stretches some 2km over the fertile alluvial floodplain. This is one of the few bridging points over the River Severn and this link is essential for the economic success of the region.

Bottom left - this shot is looking upstream towards Worcester and shows just how high the river the river must rise to breach its western bank. The eastern bank forms a steep river cliff that forcing the floodwater westwards across the floodplain.
